The congress is changing from the biggest observatory the US has to support to God knows what.Do you may know the biggest observatory all around the world is in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and thatour cogressmen want to drive the funds to it, for other plans. Are they even considerating the option of closing?. Do you think this's feiar? Why they don't bring our boys back home, so like that the wouldn't use so much money from our IRS to solvent a war isn't giving us good results. They prefer to sacrifice the knowledge for war, What do you think? Are they right? Which I don't believe. Why don't you write to your representive to keep one of the most achivements to recolect information from all around the world and beyond our galaxy? This is whe should feel proud of.

Come on people, this person probably speaks 5 or 6 languages, so what if English isn't their best one? What you're saying is we are pulling support for a scientific project so we can have more money to conduct the war. In fact, the war is just an excuse for pulling funding. The real reason is they just don't want to fund it. That's doesn't make the decision any less stupid!

Arecibo is a radio telescope, not an optical one. The huge radio dish built into the hillsides does radio astronomy -- capturing radio waves from pulsars, microwave emissions from fast-spinning neutron stars, etc. It also spends some time doing SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) broad-band radio searches of space.
Yes, I agree that Arecibo is an important science installation, and has provided some outstanding observations that have helped us understand the universe and our place in it. It is deserving of our support financially. However...it is old, in need of repair, and with installations such as the VLA (very large array) in New Mexico (an array of smaller dishes that can combine their signals to give the results of a single dish thousands of meters in size), it is no longer the cutting-edge scientific instrument it once was. I'd rather see funds to go Arecibo than the Iraq war...but I do understand that our science dollars are limited, and that we do have to put those limited dollars where they'll do the most good -- right now I don't think that's Arecibo. Sorry :(

It's sad they're diverting funds from science to war, but I couldn't expect much else from the current administration. This is the same president who dislikes even the idea of stem cell research. It's heartbreaking to think that people like that are holding us back.

You need to correct your statement/question if you want us to understand the issue better.
It sounds like congress is making funds available for a project in Puerto Rico, so they can fund the war?

OK, I get it!
Why don't we bring the troops back home, so there can be an observatory in Puerto Rico!
OK, and then when terrorists are attacking the US again, we can all go to Puerto Rico and look at the stars.
Yeah, OK, right....
