What might our galaxy and mankind be like in 10,000 years? Read the Foundation series by Issac Asimov, written over 50 years ago, wherein man has left Earth and colonized the galaxy so thouroughly that his origin is lost in antiquity.
Hawking is not talking science fiction. Yes, to us on Earth, the trip to the nearest star would take years with such a vehicle, but to the astronauts, only months due to time dialation. If mankind can keep from destroying himself, if we can survive our technical adolescence and be the humanity we are capable of, it is our destiny to colonize this corner of the galaxy over the next 200 years, and continue from there.
By the way, also technically we are on the verge of curing all forms of disease, including aging, in this century. I believe it is possible that many alive today will have an indefinite lifespan, and witness or even participate in solar and galactic colonization. And if your life can last an indefinite time, what is a few months, or years, or even decades of travel?

Considering the Sun has 5 Billion years left in it before it melts everything on earth we will need to move one day if we are to survive. The nearest solar system andromeda would take 2 million years to reach there at the speed of light so the cave men would have a better start than us if they had the technology. Alpha centura is our nearest star but they have found only gas planets so far orbiting it.

As long as you plan to take your gods with you, we will not allow you to leave your star system. Once you mature as a species, you would be allowed, but Humans will not have worry about that. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species. Your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you and neither does your penchant to breed beyond your planet's ability to sustain you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

possibly in numerous hundred years or in no way. possibly: Mars is the only a threat candidate planet on which human beings can land. at present day, we don't have the technologies to maintain a small group alive for the 22 month around holiday to Mars. A small group on Mars for an exploratory holiday would desire to technically be observed as a colony. previous the technologies barrier, the value of transporting an extremely few human beings, kit, components and gasoline for the holiday might bankrupt the full Earth. it particularly is perplexing to get a experience for a fashion a tactics away Mars is, or how high priced it particularly is to get something off the Earth. in no way: so a tactics as basic human beings living their lives and raising households on Mars as they might in a village, it’s no longer a threat (apologies to technology fiction followers). The problems are super. An severe volume of help from Earth may well be required for the colonists only to stay alive. each little thing of on a regular basis existence might p.c. severe technologies to end on Mars. With a single malfunction, all or maximum might die. the exterior of Mars and area oftentimes is the main adversarial ecosystem human beings have ever experienced. it may well be a tactics extra handy, extra inexpensive and safer to construct a village on the backside of the sea. Sorry, this one Earth is all we get. .

I believe in the ability to "distort" space to achieve incredible velocities between two points. A form of it already takes place with "gravitational lensing". I think of it as a string. You can join both ends of the string as 1 point, then, release the string and material which started on one end of the string has been deposited on the other end of the string. Technologies such as this will revolutionize the way we think of Einstein's theories, and will allow us to colonize the stars as in Hawking's theory like you mentioned above.

Nobel prize winning physicist Enrico Fermi, who designed humankinds first controlled fission reactor (among other things -pretty much every solid state physics concept is named after him) gave an argument that answers your question commonly known as "Where is everybody" see the wiki page

People can't drive going 55 miles per hour now. Can you imagine how bad they would drive at 186,000 miles per second. What would the vehicle look like when it hit an object that flew in its path. Reaction time is not that quick you know.
