Hi, thanks for taking time to answer my question....

Im babysitting a tarantula for a friend. Small Arizona Desert Tarantula, about four years old. She eats small crickets.

Im curious what it's body language means. Can anyone help me and tell me what it means when she stands up and her tail/butt go high into the air? She does this when I reach into the cage to clean a little. My friend said she is friendly and likes to crawl around on you - but this appears to be as a sign of aggression, and makes me a bit scared to put my hand into the cage.....

Anyone know what this means?
THANKS AGAIN!!

That is a threatening move . . . be sure you aren't just darting your hand into her space. Move slowly and try to stroke her back a little. If you're really nervous then put on a rubber glove and move her to another container when you clean.

I've never known a tarantula that enjoyed having its cage cleaned. The move sounds aggressive to me; perhaps it is your method of introducing your hand to the cage. Do it slowly and don't move suddenly; sometimes you can make her go onto your hand by softly pushing her from behind with your other hand or a small object. But I imagine your friend has a regular method that doesn't upset the tarantula, and your hand movements don't match the ones your friend uses.

When she does this she is probably giving you a warning to stay away from me.If you don't she'll bite you.Tarantulas are usually shy and don't like to fight or be aggressive that often.Better to be safe than sorry.

Best Wishes and Good luck!
