I have two fantail goldfish that were floating ontop of the tank most of the time & seemed to lose interest in their food. I was advised this could be a lack of oxygen, so got an airstone to blow bubbles into the tank - & now they just sit on the bottom instead! They do not seem to have any obvious signs of disease, so can anyone give me any ideas on how to sort them out & get them swimming again?! Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I don't like to think of my fish being unhappy or unwell.

Do you have your light on? Mine usually go to the bottom of the tank when the light is on and when I turn it off they start swimming around. Also, when they are just sitting there and not swimming they are resting or sleeping.

Its ether unwell, possibly with the aid of water high quality or it ought to be the size of tank, if fish are inactive in day mild hours yet lively while it gets darkish, then it because of the incontrovertible fact that they do no longer sense secure, no conceal or they sense limited in a small tank, if the are inactive all of the time even while it gets darkish then examine your water, be specific once you do water ameliorations you enable the water sit down for some hours so its kind of the comparable temperature because of the fact the water in the tank

Please note that it is NOT normal for goldfish to exhibit this behaviour in normal temperatures (if it gets cold, like under 65F, they may be more lethargic) for long periods of time.

Can you give us some more info? It sounds to me like lethargy caused by nitrite or ammonia poisoning and/or stunting.

What size tank are they in? Fancy Goldies need at least 15-20 gallons per fish. Do you frequently (weekly) do a water change? What else is in the tank?
Goldfish are hardy fish but they are also huge waste producers. They are poop machines. Without a proper sized tank and frequent water cleaning, they will eventually succomb to ammonia poisoning.

If your tank is large enough, and you are cleaning enough, and I assume you are using a dechlorinator... What are you feeding? Feeding a non varying diet can sometimes result in malnutrition.

My fish stay at the bottom and can do for days at a time, with no ill affects i believe they are just happy to stay where they are at the time, and also the ripples caused by the bubbles could be a factor in why they are not staying by the top.

For one fish cannot site and for two it sounds like you are over feeding ur fish - this can kill them. I would put them on a diet and maybe move the tank, the light and surroundings may be affecting how the feel

I had the same problem and i found out that we fishes were sick because they always refuse to eat and they sit on the bottom....All i know is that they will eventually die. Maybe next time u shouldn't buy goldfish....i would recommend you to buy a Guppy instead of Goldfish.

Fish 'relax' sometimes, if they are losing interest in their food you may be feeding them too much, if you feed them once a day regularly they should come up to the surface to eat.

It might be the nitrate levels in your fishtank. pop to the petshop and get a kit that tests the nitrate level. if it is too high or too low you can buy chemical solutions to correct it. this is normally the reason why fish become lethargic. Hope it helps.
