I'm typing a document in Microsoft Word (Windows 98, 2nd edition) and I got a pop up from Microsoft saying there was a problem and had to close. When I got back on, my letter was a "read only" document even though I had not done anything to change the status. When I go to tools, nothing is checked and there are no passwords, neither did I ever enter a password. Do I have to start this whole document over? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is a legal paper and has tons of those special indents, bolding, underlining, etc., etc. Thank You

No you don't have to start over, although you may need to transfer your work to a new word document. open the read only document, hit Ctrl+a, right click and copy... then open a new word document and right click, paste. Viola.

Find out where your document is located (Folder/Directory) and when you find it, highlite it and then right mouse click. When you right mouse click, select PROPERTIES at bottom,. then DESELECT "Read Only" button and click OK. This should make the document an Archive and you should access it.

Check your Microsoft Word preferences and see if you've selected an option to make your documents "Read Only". If so, thats where you should undo that option.

It's read only as it may be a recovered version of the document post system crash. Do a simple "Save As" on the document and then use continue with the document you just re-saved.

If that fails, try copying all the text and then pasting into another blank document.

Find where your document is located, the actual file. Right click on it select properties and then uncheck the read only box.
