Go best with an air sign instead of a fire sign?
so like a leo would go best with a libra instead of their own element a aries or a sagittarius?

It's pretty simple. You go best with the two other signs in your element. So Leo would go best with Sagittarius & Aries. You also go best with the complimentary element of your sign. Fire & Air compliment each other and Water & Earth compliment each other. The only exception is your opposite sign which is always a complimentary element. For example, Leo's opposite sign is Aquarius. So in the end your highest compatible signs are:
Leo
(Best) Aries & Sagittarius
(Good) Libra & Gemini

You may like air signs because you have an Air ascendant or an Air descendant. Often times, the descendant shows what signs we are attracted to (take that with a grain of salt though, my Descendant is in Gemini and I really don't get along well with them). But I have a Sagittarius Ascendant and I seem to like Fire signs. It all depends. You could also have your 7th house or Venus sign ruled by an Air sign. Both represent love (Venus being the planet of love, and 7th house being the house of long term marriages and partnerships)

FIre usually goes best with air signs because just like in the world around us oxygen feeds the fire... thats exactly what an air sign does for a fire sign.......

i'm a fire sign and i have dated guys from each of the elements. i seem to go best with water signs for some reason, maybe because i have a short attention span when it comes to relationships and i like the attention that the clingy, needy water signs give me. i don't mean that in a bad way, i think its great when people aren't afraid to show emotion... which is what draws me to water signs in the first place. maybe it's the opposites attract syndrome too, i don't do well with people who are too much like me (for example, other sag's). but this is just my opinion. :-)

I know i hate it when people who don't believe in astrology get on here.
Anyway, I am a sag and my husband is as well. But I think that was a fluke, lol, because my other serious relationships were actually air signs. But I love being with another sag because we are so similar in a lot of ways.

I m n Aries & I really go best w/ another fire sign. I don't like Aquarians (my ideal match), that water jug they're holding is for a reason. ..They luv to put out our fire!! though they r considered "air" signs.

No. Fire signs go best with other fire signs (Aries, Leo & Sagittarius)
However, 2 people of the same sign dating with either be really good or really bad....
