Of course it is.

Do you want a round braid or a flat braid?

It's darned hard to describe in text but...

Round: Reach between the outermost strand on the right side and the right inner strand. Grab the outermost strand on the left side from behind. Pull in between the right outer strand and the right center strand and lay it across the right center strand. This makes turns it into the new left inner strand. Now, reach between the left outermost strand and the left center strand. Grab the right outermost strand from behind, pull it between the left outer strand and the left center strand. lay it across the left inner strand. It now becomes the new right center strand. repeat...

Flat: Just do the basic over/under thing alternating the left and right sides.

Absolutely- Think of it as weaving.

Break your four strands apart- I find it easier to put a clip on the end of each- or a rubber band -to keep them separate.

Start from the left side and run that section over or under (your preference, both give slightly different looks) the next section. Run it the opposite way through the next section as in a normal braid.

Usially, you are done at this point and move onto the section now at the left. In a four strand, you need to now reverse your motion on the next strand like weaving. if you went over the second section, now go under to finish this row.

Now pick up the new left section on start over.

Things to watch for-
Layered hair may get flyaways easier with a thicker braid style

It is more difficult to keep this evenly taught while braiding

Control over all the sections is difficult with only two hands

Yes! Just braid as usual...adding the extra strand...Cross 1 cross 2 cross 3 cross 4 and repeat until hair is braided.

Yes it's possible. I am trying it as well, and the more you practice, the easier it gets. Check here for instructions, very clear and basically explained using pictures and drawings. Good luck!

Wel I'm really not sure...

Because if you tried with only 4 strands, the braid would be too small.

unless you have thin hair ....

But, I'm not really sure. I would say try it if its not working your answer is sloved;;
