when you love your mother and love your girlfriend is it the same kind of love? Obviously, the love gets expressed differently because they are different people and they are different situations. But is the love the same? Is it spiritual (like true love) or is it hormonal (just good chemistry).

I know that a man's love for his Mother is something only they have for each other. Love it a word that is attached too many times to a feeling. I have been told by several people that you will never love anyone as much as you love your children. I think that kind of love is deep rooted and is part of your being.
I have never had children but I know the overwhelming joy of being an Aunt.
Maybe that is what love is? Overwhelming joy for someone else.

I believe they are the same love but as you pointed out, expressed differently. Whether or not it's spiritual or good chemistry is hard to say because I know people who love AND have good chemistry with their Mothers. I'm sure the same can be said about soulmates.

This is a good one.

There are many kinds of affection which we call "love".

The long-term trust we grow with people is what I consider to be actual love. This is the thing which keeps us connected to another person not out of obligation or desperation. We want to make this person happy without benefit to us; the relationship, itself, is beneficial.

Now, there is obsession and chemistry, which is what our culture considers as "love". As an example, Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" takes place over three days, and they hate one another for two of them. We are taught that "love at first sight" (which is actually just sexual attraction) is the only love worth having. The problem? The raging fire goes away when you start sharing toilet paper and toothpaste and are washing someone else's underwear. Day-to-day life removes that romantic factor. That's when love, actual love, needs to be there. You can love your girlfriend as much as your mother, and yes, it is how you express its physical manifestation (you give mom a hug; you have sex with partner) which makes it appear different.

Love, sadly, is tossed around as a loaded word which people use to get what they want because others define it as genuine affection. Therefore, when love leaves one brokenhearted, it was never love in the first place but obsession, affection, or lust.

tricky question- there are different levels of truth, and it's all how you choose to see it.

i think the ultimate truth is that the energy that is Love comes from the Divine and when it is pure- it has no opposite expression. however, it can be felt at varying degrees, but the love you feel for your mom is from the same source that the love you feel for your girlfriend. it is from the same source that provdes your love for humanity or your love of nature..etc

but the "love" you feel for a partner is often not pure spiritual love- it does manifest as 2 sides love/hate and it is actually ego need and addictive clinging, otherwise known as conditional love.

The love that you feel for your parent/sibling is different from the love you feel for another of the opposite sex. Some basic elements are the same, i.e., caring, sharing, protecting, communication, etc., etc. But the love of another (opposite sex) is on a way different level than that of a parent/sibling.

love can be expressed differently, but it is still love.
it's not acquired, it's within us the one we were born & wont cease to exist till the day we pass away.
it's just up to you to use it....
wherever, whenever, whoever, however you want to express it to.
