Anyone is rich if they have got a cleared amount in the bank. i.e no debts of any kind. No mortgage to pay, no credit cards, and they still have money over after all the other domestic bills have been paid. That's rich.

It's all relative. In the mid-1990s I worked for a couple of startup companies that were big on ideas and short on capital, so we lived a fairly meager lifestyle. When I finally had enough of that, I hired on with a successful company with a nice stock-option plan and started rebuilding.

At my first year anniversary, when the initial chunk of options finally matured, I cashed some in and bought everyone in the family something they'd been wanting for a long time -- a super-whizzy sewing machine for my wife, a nifty bedroom suite for our younger daughter. Our oldest daughter (then 11) had just become interested in photography at the time, taking interesting pictures with disposable cameras, so I took her to the local camera shop and let her pick out a good 35mm camera. She picked a nice Pentax SLR that had the ability to turn all the automatic features off.

On the way back we stopped for lunch and chatted about her interests. I reminded her that the best way to learn to be a good photographer was to take a lot of pictures and see how they turn out. "And don't worry about getting the prints developed," I said; "it's not that expensive, and we can afford it now." She thanked me, then looked thoughtfully off into the middle distance and said:

"That's the problem with being rich -- you just have to keep spending money."

I've always loved that -- partly because it's so fantastically out-of-the-mouths-of-babes true, but partly because my daughter thought we were rich because I could have a roll of film developed every week.

And considering how little we'd had for the previous three or four years, she was right.

(Now, the follow-on: this daughter went on to excel in photography in high school, and is now enrolled in university where she's pursuing a bachelor of fine arts in photography with a minor in film, with the intention of becoming a cinematographer. When she wins her first Oscar, I can only hope she tells that story at the award ceremony...)

To some families, just having an extra $500 a month is rich to them. For others they want to one up Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Solomon of the bible, etc. Even those who are low class citizens here in the USA are considered extremely wealthy to third world countries.

The definition of rich is in the eye of the beholder.

Money doesn't make you rich...it just allows you to buy things. You are rich only if you are happy, have dreams, and have the health and energy and faith to work hard toward goals. Faith in God and trust in His Divine Will will make you richer than anyone wih billions,. Pray for the sad, sad souls of the people who only have money and not happiness.

The amount that people who have less than you perceive you to have.

You are only 'rich' money-wise if you have more... or seem to have more... than the person you are compared with.

However, you can be rich in many ways that have nothing to do with monetary value. But the 'rich' is in feeling, perception and comparision.
