The issue isn't gay unions. Anyone everywhere can have any union they want. What is the need in the gov't recognizing it?
In asking the gov'ts permission you are enabling the gov't to deny you. As it stands people have the right to define their own relationships, except in heterosexual marriages where they are defined under the law.
You need to think about the bigger issue why do we give the gov't power to recognize any marriage anyway?

Advances in civilaization are prompted by evolutionary social and physical changes. Since the dawn of man and the invention of marriage, the sanctity of that union has been reserved for those with oposing sex organs. There have been no physical evolutionary changes to change that. Should Gays feel the need to permanently pairbond, the only social change required would be to assure equal rights with respect to benefits, joint ownership, and other legal issues. There need not be any incursion into the religious sanctity that has surrounded the act of marriage between a man and a woman for the past 5000 years.
Black rights, Indian rights, Latin rights, Disabled rights, Equal rights, Gay rights... it kinda flows don't you think?

I don't have a good answer for you but I would like to say something in defense of USA. This is the country with more freedoms than any other country in the world. We do not prosecute people for being gay. Changes come about a little slower than we would like but I'm sure one day this will be an issue of the past. I'm sick of people criticizing America and they never lived anywhere else but here, some of them never left US soil. Have a little more faith in your country.

Nothing. It's just a bunch of people who are worried about something that is far less important than, oh I don't know... war, terrorism, global warming, etc. I could care less if gay people got married. But some people have strong Christian beliefs and I don't think that's going to go away for a long time. I think eventually gay marriage will be fine and there will be some other minority taking the abuse as usual in this country.

As to the meaningless issue, yes there was. About 10 years ago there was a ballot issue in California to have gays protected as an ethnic class. It was defeated.
And I am sure they consider it a moral (?) victory, if nothing else.

I've argued the same thing, and never got a good reply. The best I've seen was essentially either, "I'm prejudiced against gays because I think that gay sex is icky and gross", or "My god says it's wrong, so I'm against it too".
I think in 20 years this will be a non-issue. Right now to me this looks like what the civil rights arguments must have been like in the mid-50's. Some people pushing for, some against, some not caring either way, and most realizing that, in their hearts, the pro-civil rights groups were right.

Very well said!
It seems to me that the federal government has more important issues that need to be dealt with. Fixing social security, budget etc;
I would also be willing to bet politicians that are against it, stand on, religious belief or, have been told by their party what opinion to have.

Right on! We live in America where it is your right to do what you want. I'm a devout Christian, but have real issues with the church pushing gays out. We are not to judge, we all sin, and only God knows if being "Gay" is a choice. Everyone who pushes against gay marriage seems to use the religion card...too bad there is a thing called freedom of religion! What happened to the idea of being accepting of everyone!

I totally agree. I think anyone should be married to whom they love. Why should the president really care? I mean they let people who beat children get married bc they are a man and women but they wont let gay people....how wrong is that?

I agree, kids need a loving home and in my years as an LEO I saw many 2 parent homes that kids are better off not being in. If someone can give a kid a good home, I say let them do it.
