Excretory organs are those organs of the body which remove wastes from blood or cells and send the wastes to the outside. They are:
The lungs excrete carbon dioxide and water.
Sweat glands excrete water, salt, and traces of urea.
Large intestine excretes water and other wastes including undigested food. This constitutes feces.
Kidneys excrete water, urea, and salts. This is called urine.

The urinary system includes two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, and a urethra. Two functions of the urinary system are:
Regulate and maintain electrolyte and chemical balance.
Filter blood and remove body wastes.
KIDNEYS
The kidneys are bean-shaped organs resting high against the dorsal wall of the abdominal cavity. They extend between the 12th thoracic and the 3rd lumbar vertebrae. Each kidney is four to six inches long, and two inches wide. The kidneys filter about 180 L (65 gallons) of blood plasma daily. On the average 1 to 1.5 L. of urine is formed and excreted daily to remove waste products. Each kidney is divided into two layers: an outer, granular layer called the cortex and an inner, striated layer called the medulla. The cortex is composed of millions of functional units of the kidney called nephrons. The medulla consists of renal pyramids whose apex empties into cup-like cavities called calyces, which empty into the renal pelvis.
The nephron unit is considered the functional unit of the kidney. The nephrons are complex, coiled tubules (convoluted tubules) which empty into collecting tubes. The process by which urine is filtered through the nephron is complex. There are about 2 million nephron units in each kidney.

The parts of the nephron unit include:
The renal arteriole carries blood to the nephron.
The Bowman’s capsule surrounds a cluster of capillary loops called the glomerulus. The glomerulus is the actual filter, which filters out water, glucose, and electrolytes.
The proximal tubule reabsorbs glucose, some electrolytes and water.
The loop of Henle secretes urea, reabsorbs electrolytes and water.
The distal tubule secretes ammonia, some electrolytes; some drugs, and also reabsorbs some electrolytes.
The collecting duct reabsorbs electrolytes and urea. It also secretes ammonia and electrolytes. It is now concentrated urine.
The renal venules then return the blood to the body.
