No you dont have to do anything you dont want to but at least make an informed decision about it. Are you really more comfortable on your back? the baby is pushing on blood vessels, nerves, your internal organs etc so they arent going to be working to full capacity. do you NEED your baby to be moving about whilst you sleep? if it wants to move, it will do when you are on your side, you probably just dont feel it as much.
think about the safety of yourself and your child, then weigh this up against comfort. i myself am a front sleeper so i know what it is like to be in a uncomfortable position on your side, give it a try for the baby, after all, there is only a few weeks to go!

The reason it is suggested you sleep on your left side is because the blood flow into your heart is from the right and gravity helps the blood circulate into your heart. It's better for you and the baby, but it isn't mandatory. At that stage do whatever is the most comfortable for you. Comfort is hard enough to find as it is. I would think you'd want the baby to move around less when you're trying to sleep instead of more though.

Behind gravid uterus lies great vessels which supply blood to fetus. If mother lies prone ,they get compressed and baby gets less blood and oxygen. So the fetus becomes restless.Thats why you are noticing more movements when you sleep on back, which is not a good indication. On other hand its safer to lie on left or right side, usually right side is advised because stomach is facilitated to drain its content into intestines which relieve bloating sensation.

I wasn't aware of there being a rule about it, to be honest. I didn't think sleeping on your back was a good idea, though, because the weight of the baby can be bad for blood supply.

I always slept on my side with a slim pillow underneath the bump for support.

Sleeping on your back and on the left side causes strain on your already over worked heart. It can also cause a depletion of oxygen and blood flow to your baby.

With this said, you can sleep on you back comfortably if you are elevated to about 45 degrees or higher.

its not compulsory to sleep on your left but is surely advisable as in that position the baby receives all the desired constituents from his mother in a much better and healthy manner...well this is what my doc told me when i was pregnant last year
