You probably won't even see the needles. They are literally hair-thin and you feel nothing. It doesn't hurt. It's not scary and it does work.

Acupuncture is the most effective treatment for pain and rheumatic problems. I know that other forms of treatment are better for other problems - but for pain relief especially if associated with arthritic complaints this is the best!
Any pin prick will hurt depending on your tolerance for pain. But as the needles are very fine(thin) 95% of the pricks will not hurt. You will most probably not feel the prick at all.
Once the needles are put into your skin there will not be any pain - at most a feeling of the presence of the needle -called 'daichi'.
The needles vary from 3 inches or more to 1/4 inch or less (usually 1 inch long)- but that is not the issue. The length is not important. The thickness of the needle is what matters.

I too hate needles, when I get blood drawn I nearly faint, so I understand where you are coming from! I've had many sessions of acupuncture and at first it might seem scary, but it really is not! Just don't be tense - relax and it will be alright. You will feel the tiny prick of the needles going in, but the feeling leaves almost instantly, and then you can't really feel them for the rest of the time, except for maybe a tingling feeling. Find a well known acupuncturist in your area and try him/her out! It will help your pain as long as you are comfortable with the procedure - I hope you enjoy your first session!

Acupuncture does not hurt, the needles are very very small. I am also scared of needles and hate getting blood drawn but an acupuncture treatment does not even compare to that. I barely feel the needles when they go in, and it is so relaxing I practically fall asleep during my treatment every time, and I feel great afterward.

Just a tip, when you are on the table, if your acupuncturist doesn't tell you (which they should if they are good) to breathe when the needles are going in. It helps you relax, taking long slow deep breaths.

Good luck!

If you are really scared of needles find an acupuncturist that uses laser instead of needles. Laser is supposed to be more effective than needles anyway. But I would go to a chiropractor before you do acupuncture.

I have had acupuncture for my back pain before, and I highly recommend it. It really helps relax the muscles like no massage can. The needles are very thin. One acupuncturist I went to hooked up the needles to a mild electric pulse...let me tell you, it felt sooooo good. the mild rhythmic pulses felt like someone was giving me a good massage, one that really goes deep into the tired, overstretched muscles of mine.

Find a good, recommended acupuncturist, and it will be a good experience. Don't be afraid. It's not like getting vaccinations at all.

No, it really does not hurt, and the needles are very small! You are not the only one with fear of needles, I want to cry when they need to draw blood, but acupuncture is really easy! Relax and I hope it will help you with the back pain!
