Mark B is correct, however....
You are a very small fish to Microsoft. They are more concerned with corporate companies using the same licenses over and over. You installing one copy twice will not raise any flags at all.
I have done what you are wanting to do and nothing has ever happened. However, it is against the law, so I have to say - "No, dont do it!"

I am sure you have friends that say it can be done but Microsoft has become extreemly Pro Active on stamping out illegal copying. If you install your disk you will need to download security updates from Microsoft, First thing you will have to download, before Microsoft will let you download the rest, is a Validation Tool. This checks with their database to see if the copy has already been registered. If it has ( and yours has) you will not be able to go any further so its a waste of time. PCs are almost as cheap as chips these days so it will be worth buying one with the OS preinstalled in the long run,

You absolutely can not. Microsoft is very strict on its licensing policy, and you are not allowed to install this software on more then one PC. You will need to break down and buy a PC with Windows XP included.
If you decided to ignore the above advise, keep in mind that if they discover that it is installed on more then one PC (there are special program ways they can do this) they can invalidate both installations and you will have to go out and buy 2 new copies instead of 1.

I wouldn't bother or even attempt to install Windows on another computer.
Especially these days when you can buy an entire computer system for aroud $299.99 after rebates. These include the computer, keyboard, mouse, monitor and most tiems speakers, some even come with a printer....
True, they are entry level computers, but from what you said, it's all your mother in law needs.
Best Buy, Circuit City, Offce Depot, Office Max, Staples etc all sell such systems from time to time. Just check their Sunday Newspaper Ads....
You can also check online at tigerdirect.com or newegg.com

That would be a violation of XP's license and they would revoke the license making both computers useless. besides the fact they like to sue people.
Install freespire. It is the easiest Linux to use and its free.
It has everything you need, OS word processing auto detection of almost anything including network cards.
