I am thinking of buying a 400gb internal hard drive and fitting it to my desktop, are there any cables i need or anything i need to install? A computer technician i know came round recently he told me my computer should easily have enough power to run 2-3 hard drives, at the moment there is just a 300gb hard drive. Do my two hard drives have to be the same type? My current 300gb is sata. I haven't acutally looked properly how its plugged in, but it looks simple.

Here are some good guidelines for you :

(find out what specific type of drive you have first ... make sure the new one is at least as fast & as good a performer)

Sata is the best however only one drive per channel. That means no jumper setup just plug and play.

So you need an open port on the motherboard, a sata cable, a sata power cable, a hard drive, a mounting point, and 4 hard drive screws.

And a touch of common sense. It is really simple trust me I've done it many times. The first thing ot check is to make sure that you have an open spot on your motherboard for a Sata.

If not you may have to use an IDE, slower and yes jumpers.
This means if you have 1 cd drive you can set the hard drive as the master and the Cd as the slave or a second cable and hard drive as master.

The Bad news there are generally either 2,4 or 6 sata cables on a motherboard. when there are 2 sata plugs there are not necessarily 2 IDE plugs.
Meaning your computer may not support more than 2 cd drive's and 2 hard drives.

once you're nevertheless haveing difficulty, it particularly is particularly helpful to bypass to a working laptop or computing device save and get a case to transform the only annoyingcontinual into an externalcontinual !!! The situations are approximately 30 greenbacks to transform thecontinual. which would be one answer. the different answer i can think of of is to alter the jumper pins on the decrease back of the aggravatingcontinual till you detect a mix that works. you probably did confuse me somewhat once you mentioned the cable defined the slave. The jumper pins on the decrease back of thecontinual confirm if is grasp slave. there's a diagram at thecontinual to tutor the thank you to set it to a slave. The jumper pin is a small plastic cap you will see on the decrease back of thecontinual that only pulls off and could be moved to the different set of pins.
