It's the least likely thing the baby could be allergic too. You want to start with simple foods. Gerber oatmeal is another good choice for a first food. Wait on the mixed until the baby has had some experience with the simple cereals.

Rice is the least allergenic. Also you should start with a single grain (rice, oats, or whatever as long as it is just one thing at a time) so if your baby has an allergic reaction you know what the baby is reacting to. I will say I never fed my daughter rice cereal. We try to eat whole grains in our family so I didn't want her first food to be a white, refined grain. Starting with rice really matters more if you're wanting to start solids early. Start a little later and you can be more liberal in what you use. Starting solids later has many advantages. We started my daughter on fruits and veggies at 6 months and on oatmeal (just regular, not baby oatmeal) at 7 months. Our pediatrician said that was fine to use whole grains that early but not earlier. Babies thrived and survived for centuries before Gerber made rice cereal. I think a lot of this baby food is just designed so that kids can be started on solids too early. Gerber makes more money the earlier you start your kids on their foods, so they have incentive to make stuff for 4-month-olds.

They suggest rice cereal first because there is a very small chance that a person is allergic to rice. Try rice first and then you can try the other kinds. Try one at a time though so you can watch for allergic reactions. Good luck.

Because the infants have a weak digestive system, you want to start out with a single grain rice cereal to see how well they can handle it. The other cereals are to harsh on their systems. They have acidic fruits and are harder to digest for babies. They also may have flavors which can lead to food allergies.

It's recommended not to give gluten to babies under 4 months old, to minimise the risk of them developing Coeliac Disease later in life. Wheat, barley, rye and oats all contain gluten, which is why cereals containing them are not recommended.

I think Rice has the least chance of an allergic reaction and may be easiest to digest.

You need to introduce one new food at a time (in case of allergies) and rice is easiest on babies tummy to digest.
