Lock them in the naughty cupboard. Forever. lol
Seriously, I agree they can really test your patience. They suddenly become a part of your family and create expectations. Um, I would say, be patient, learn to bite your tongue when it doesnt matter that much, but dont be bullied about important stuff.

Once told that when you marry live at least 10 miles away for the in-laws and continue to move a further 10 miles for every year following.

Not bad.
It's a ticky mix of brown-nosing and being confident.
Much like talking with the boss at work.
I lived with mine for 9 very long months. They are baptist, non swearing, non drinking, non sport liking types and I am football loving scotsman who loves a good swear especially when I've had a few beers.
In spite of this, we get on very well and I think I'm properly one of the family, but it takes a lot of work, trust me!

once you've kept on being nice to them and they deliberatley exclude them - you could front up to them - or ignore them? Hide behind the couch when they come around and dotn answer the door, make sure you have caller display on the phone before you answer the phone, quote bible verse to them - a man shall leave his family and be united to his wife (not be a mommies boy), the options are limitless!when your inlaws come to the door while your partners out - answer the door through the intercom stating that he isnt home - and dont let them in!!!!
Personally id just ignore them, and let hubby take his laundry home to mommy - less for me to do!!

I ignore them, most of the time. My wife knows how I feel about them, so she doesn't force me to do anything that I don't want to. If we invite them over, we're cordial to them and refuse to get sucked in to any of their drama. When they call, I don't sit and chat, I have them get to the point fast. No small talk.
It keeps me sane that way.

Spike their drinks and their food, and let them go to la-la land, just don't over do it. In my history, I have always gotten along with the dads, its just the mothers who are hard headed.
