Yes, it is very easy to do... go to samspade.org... and yes, with dynamic IP addresses you have to be fast, but usually you can narrow it down to the provider and then from there you can find them.

Your IP address is embedded in the header of every e-mail that you send. It doesn't matter what the From: address is in the e-mail either, so using a Yahoo e-mail account with a fake name will not hide you.

No power is needed, you just need to know how to look at and interpret SMTP headers. Most folks can learn in a few minutes, even newbies.

Once you have the IP address, identifying the exact sender gets slightly trickier since you need to persuade their ISP to give up the information. A court order or subpoena pretty much guarantees that you'll get that information.

Yes it is possible to track an email to it's origin. You get a unique IP address from your Internet provider. This is stamped onto you email when you send it. The receiver can view this email address. Then use a free online "look-up" to see who owns that IP address. Once they know who your Internet service provider is (the IP owner), they can contact them. The service provider can then see who had a lease on that IP address at that time and from there see who the user was. And as you subscribe to their service, they will know your telephone number, name, address and bank details.

Using Yahoo free address does not help as you IP is still stamped. And having a Dynamic IP still does not help as the service provider logs who had what and when.

Technically, yes and no. someone who is intent on covering their tracks can easily avoid being tracked down by email. For example, if you send an email to someone, your originating IP is usually sent in it as part of the message header. The message header is usually hidden to most users, but viewing full headers can show you all sorts of information on where the email originated from. Someone who is careless will reveal their true originating IP and that can be basically tracked to a general area/location as publicly routable (tracable) IP addresses are assigned as subnet blocks by ICANN. So, for example, particular ISPs are given a set of IP addresses. If you happen to be on that particular ISP, your IP address can be routed/traced to a particular router somewhere. Now, how far from that router is hard if not impossible to determine, but the router itself could reveal a state or city closest to you.

Yes if they really wanted to
your email address comes from a mail server.
the mail server gets it's information from a authenticator
( checks you used and password)
it also gets the IP and port number from your ISP, so it knows who sending it messages. your ISP connects to you via dial up or DSL, you are given an IP to use temporarily.
this temporary IP is recorded as to who had it for that period of time.

To make it simple, yes they can but it's a lot of work, time and money to pay for the workers tracking this down

They will only do this if you did something really knotty.

I know, I work in the data comm field

Yes, this is possible, there are software out there that have the capability of packet sniffing... which when decoded can determine the origin of the e-mail.. however this can be spoofed and therefore hidden....

it's probably possible, but i don't think anyone can do that because of privacy issues. like on law and order etc, i'm guessing only the police/fbi can do so.
