Well, at some point in the day, go to the Signature room at the top of the John Hancock building. Go to the south side of the buiding (the side facing the Water Tower Place), take the elevator up to the signature room and go to the bar. Have a drink, maybe snack on something, and enjoy the view. It's especially cool at night to see all the lights, planes, etc. You could go to "Reading Under the Influence" at Sheffield's (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/events/234831,0,7500102.event). It's a local writers show at a cool bar. The writers have to do a shot and then read their short piece. It's a fun night.
As far as restaurants go, it depends on what you want. I'm sure a bunch of people are going to say "deep dish pizza" since they think that's what Chicago is all about but there's so much more. Check out the Metromix website (http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/). We've got great steak joints, great Asian restaurants, etc. And there are some new great pizza places that don't specialze in big, thick, deep dish pizza but tradition thin pizza made in the REAL Italian style.

Chicago is home to a variety of spectacular attractions including Navy Pier, the city’s lakefront playground offering the serene setting of the Crystal Gardens and the magnificent beauty of the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. The Pier also boasts the 150-foot high Ferris wheel, a musical carousel, the Chicago Children’s Museum, a variety of restaurants and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Other attractions that you won’t want to miss include Buckingham Fountain at Grant Park, the Hancock Observatory, and the Sears Tower Skydeck.
Once in Chicago, you’ll never have to worry about finding a place to eat! Chicago features more four-star restaurants than any other city in the country and thousands of others that offer culinary favorites to suit every taste, every budget, every mood and virtually every type of person. Chicago offers a virtual United Nations of eating choices. Ethnic neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Greektown, West Rogers Park, and Pilsen are among those offering tempting tastes from around the world. Chicago is also proud to be home of award-winning restaurants and world-renowned chefs, as well as home to deep-dish pizza…one of Chicago’s most important contributions to 20th-century culture!

I wouldn't recommend Navy Pier just because its actually a tourist trap. Not much to see especially this time of the year. The Signature room has a nice view with a pricey dinner but it may be worth it if you only here for one night.

Have dinner on the 97th floor of the john handcock building downtown (I forget what the name of the restaurant is - but it's got huge windows and an AMAZING view of the city).
