Our vent will work on our heater and it will blow close to warm air. The air conditioner worked on auto but when we tried to turn the heat on auto, it would heat up and smell like the heater was coming on but all you can hear is ticking and nothing coming out of the vents, so we're freezing because I don't want to leave the vent on ALL night, for 1 it runs up the electric bill and 2, it will get too hot. We don't have the money to have someone come out so I'm trying to figure something out before we have to resort to that. I don't want my house to burn down so I'm not going to try anything. Just seeing if anyone has experienced this or not.

We have no gas in our house. It's all electric. To sum it all up, the auto switch will not work, but the vent does.

Sounds like you have a faulty relay in the system......would advise you to buy a volt-ohm-meter to check them out....or have an A/C & heating tech check out your system...

I know about furnaces and repair them in my spare time. I am not sure what kind you have. When it turns on and you hear the ticking sound that is usually the flame from the burner heating the heat exchanger. when you talk about the electric bill then do you mean you have an electric furnace. I am confused on what you have.

Sounds like the blower motor. it has 2 or 3 speeds . low for heating high for ac if thermostat is on heat and fan set manual it should come on. try turning thermostat to off position then turn fan from auto to manual if it doesnt come on call service man.
