Okay do this. Allot yourself x amount of time on the internet. Bring a timer with you. When it rings, shut off the computer and do the things that you need to do.

Internet is an addiction for some people, and yes, people can say gee, just shut it off, or stop it, but it isn't that easy. my advice would be to use the internet as a reward. Start your day with the whole thing turned off, it helps ease the temptation, then tell yourself, okay, you have to start the laundry and read the chapter for economics (or whatever you have to do) then I can check my email. When the laundry gets done I have to put it in the dryer and run the vaccum and go to the post office, then I can chat with Sally for a bit until the laundry is dry, Then I HAVE TO PUT IT AWAY before I play that game online. Don't let yourself use the computer until a task is finished. Try this, or just allot yourself a certain amount of time a day (I can use the computer between 4 and 5 o'clock and then I have to get off and do other things.) Eventually you will be able to ween yourself from being online for hours while your work goes undone.

you asked a question ON the internet about how to get OFF the internet...seems a little self defeating. Its a long shot but I'm guessing that developing self control will help. Keep busy and perhaps coming to the realization that your "habit" is going to cost you in the long run. Use it as a reward instead of a distraction.

get rid of the computer or the internet. I honestly think that's the only legit answer. My boyfriend is just as bad. He comes home from work at 6pm and sits on the damn pc playing poker until 2 in the morning. And on weekends, he lives on it. The next time he gets mad at the people playing poker w/ him and tells me to open the window so that he can throw the pc out, i'm going to. And if he doesn't throw it, i think i'm going to help him.

I do it too!
I make myself do some housework before I go and sign on. I throw in some laundry and go online while the washer runs.
It's hard, though! Right now I should be doing some work but I'm here typing away!
Maybe I'll set the kitchen timer next time.......

I do the same thing. Now when I have something to do that doesn't involve the internet, I unplug my internet cable before booting up. Then I can't sign on because I have no connection to the internet.

Shut the computer down and try to stay in an other room than the one were the computer is cause seeing it will distract you more.

God, grant me the serenity to accept
the things I can not change-
Courage to change the things I can-
and Wisdom to know the difference.
Its worth a try.
