Residence Inn has rooms for that many, but I'd like some other options.

I agree with the other posts. With 6-8 people I would look for a beach rental at Mission Beach or Mission Bay....and I would look for one that says "bay side" not "beach side". Otherwise you could try an Embassy Suites.

I am native and I would have to say to look under 'Craigslist' for rentals. There are a lot of seasonal rentals that could accomodate that amount of people. You may have a house or a condo. Have fun!

I think 6 might be the limit in a hotel due to fire codes.
