I have been thinking about getting Para-Guard, but I am having trouble finding a doctor who will place one for me as I have not had a child. I can't find much information that supports this stance - even Planned Parenthood says that it is fine for women that haven't had any children. Can anyone point me in the direction of some articles/ research that explains why this is not an acceptable form of contraception for me?

The reason doctors do not like to insert a Para-Guard IUD (copper) is because it can cause a few things. Rarely but can happen, the first is a perforation of the uterine lining. This can increase your chances in the future for a premature delivery, if it is bad it can cause you to need a hysterectomy. It can also cause scarring on the inside of the uterus while it is in place. Which can make it harder for you to conceive.
I've worked in Ob-Gyn for 10 years and have found that many doctors do not like to insert the Para-Guard for those reasons.
If you are set on having an IUD you may want to look into the Mirena IUD. This is a 5 year IUD vs a 10 year IUD. It is made out of plastic and also carries a small amount of progesterone to help with the menstrual cycles. By this I mean, some women after having the IUD put in experience heavier bleeding. This is because the body is recognizing the IUD as being something foreign and wants to expel it so it makes you bleed more. That is why you have to check preferably after you have a cycle to make sure the IUD is still there. By checking the small string that is still there.

Ultimately it is because of the uterine perforation and scarring the IUD can cause that doctors do not like to insert IUD's on childless women.

It is not unacceptable but more so not recommended for those reasons. You can still have it done just find a doctor who will do it, just know you will have to sign alot of consent forms and waivers for it. But it can be done just not recommended.

I have looked into this myself and have not been able to find anything. I think what it comes down to is the Dr.s opionon...mine won't do it either, but my friends Dr. will!! I am going to continue to look, though, and will let you know if I find anything.
