Plants live by photosynthesis -- they're powered by sunlight. Anything that eats plants therefore depends on sunlight at one remove, and anything that eats anything that eats plants depends on sunlight at two removes.

Begin with the statement: If the sun weren't there, we'd be dead.

1) The sun gives adequate thermal energy (heat) for life to survive on earth. This is especially important for the existence of water in liquid form, which is necessary for many biological reactions and biochemical substances, like blood. Greater than 70% of a living organism is composed of water. Everything would be frozen and dead without the sun's heat.

2) The sun's radiant energy is captured by plants to produce biofuels like glucose, which, when eaten, are then broken down, and the energy released is used in the body to power its processes.

We may not realize it moment to moment, but we do depend on the sun to live.

I suspect you're fighting a losing cause.

However, if you want to take up the challenge, have him mention any energy source. When he does, track it back to the sun - i.e. oils energy came from animals (dinosaurs) which got energy by eating plants which derived their energy from the sun. Nuclear energy is about the only one that wouldn't track back.

The Oxygen we breathe is produced by photosynthetic organisms. The process of photosynthesis depends upon sunlight. Also, photosynthetic organisms are at the bottom of the food chain.
