The ADA is a series of federal statutes that addresses a myriad of concerns related to handicapped people. Its two most popularly recognized functions though are (1) equal access to public buildings/necessary structures; (2) equal opportunity for employment. The first you see the effects of all around, and it only applies to the necessary or all of us with private homes would be building ramps as well. Keep in mind though, that if you are a landowner who rents property to generate income, you must make a home accessable to the handicap if a handicapped person rents from you. The second deals with business owners having to "reasonably accomodate" a handicapped person. A popular case in the last decade dealt with a person who had AIDS. They were fired b/c they needed to schedule treatment periodically every couple of days. The court found that the disease was a handicap in this context, and the job should have accomodated the patient a few hours every week so they can receive treatment. The more popular accomodations for thehandicapped seen in the work place though are special bathrooms or stalls and lifts.

It helps give individuals with disabilities access to public buildings and some rights in the workforce. If you want to see a good movie about individuals with disabilities, watch "When Billy Broke His Head." I watched that movie in my foundations of spec. ed. class.
