thats certianly the Charlie Rangel tract on this issue. one of the major arguements that proponents of the draft put forward is the egalitarian arguement that it would make the privilaged carry their fair share of the burden of national defense. six years ago, it was true that the richest americans were underrepresented in the military. however, since 9/11 the makeup of the military has changed dramtically. in 2005, the richest fifth of american housholds provided more soldiers than any other segment of the population, and far more than the poorest fifth. this certianly cuts against the popular perception, and discredit the notion that a draft is nessacary to protect the underprivileged.
the truth is even if it did protect the powerless in society, a draft would be an unjustifible use of state power. coersion in most cases must be seen as immoral, and in this case esspecially, as there are few actions of a state that can be more serious than appropriating the lives and labor of its youth to fight in wars in which the very survival of the state is not at risk.

There is a congressman who is proposing reinstating the draft for this reason - not necessarily to end the current war, but to make congress more accountable for wars in the future. The theory is that if rich peoples children were in danger of going to war, congress would go to war only if it was a dire situation and was very necessary.
I don't believe anyone wants a draft, even the person proposing it. Everyone just wants congress to be more responsible in the future, and this is a way of bringing attention to what could happen.

Actually it was a Democrat who wants this, by the name of Randal. I think he is from the house. This has nothing to do with rich or poor. Americans are not making money off the war. Rangal also wants us to send troops to North Korea and Iran as well as increase troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some Democrats want to reinstate the draft to try to end the war.
Our military doesn't want people there with them who don't want to be there.
And is it "rich" men who support the war? I support it and am in a very low income bracket.
