Should I take it to the dealer to repair or find a private shop?

Depends on your area and the shop...if you live in NYC and go to a dealer, you'll probably pay $600 but if you live in someplace like Fayetteville and go to a smaller shop, you might pay $250-$300.

ask around at work and such about who is good to take it to, there are lots and lots of small time guys like myself who have tools and a shop and can do this for half or less the cost of a business,

head gaskets dont break, they leak, lose their seal, either due to rot, or blow out

price will depend on what year and what engine if it is older 350 job only would take about 4 hours tops if it is newer engine with fuel injection it does take a lot longer

go to a small time mechanic.they will change it for you about half what the big time dealers will charge you.i dont really know what they will charge you,but i bet it will be cheaper then a dealer.
