The metamorphic process can destroy fossils in it. However, impressions such as in the wave ripple marks which can be found in quartzite do survive the metamorphic process. In such rocks as marble the fossils are deformed and often stretched by the process.

Very distorted, if at all. You can get fossils in some types of slate for example, so long as the metamorphism is not too intense.

Deformed. I've seen them in lightly metamorphosed limestone that's a good way on towards marble. You can actually measure the direction of the strain the rock was under during metamorphoses by measuring the distortion of the fossils.
