I was going to ask the same question..my friend told me that it's ACTUALLY not a good idea to make you car sit and idle..
But this has already been answered in a YahooAnswers question here.

Letting a car idle for awhile to warm up used to be the normal routine. That was before modern engine oils that don't run off engine parts, and multigrade oils that begin flowing almost instantly. Fuel injected cars only require a minute or so of idle to be ready to go, so there is no need to idle longer than that. Watch the tachometer. When you first start, the engine will idle up for a few seconds, no more than a minute. When RPMs return to normal idle, you are good to go. If you don't have a tach, just listen to the engine. When developing power any internal combustion engine will warm up faster than at idle.

Yes it is very important. Most of the wear on an engine takes place within the first 10-30 seconds after the auto has seat up over night. The oil needs to be at running temperature before you drive away. When the heater starts blowing warm air then you can gently drive away.

Two assumptions: (1) it's a gas engine, and (2) it's the car/engine your asking about as opposed to defrosting the windshiled.
It is neither necessary nor beneficial to idle the engine for a prolonged period in cold conditions. Start the engine. Wait about 30 seconds for oil pressure to build, giving you time to put on your seat belt. Then drive away.
This procedure warms up the engive faster, producing fewer emissions, and costing you less in gas, than prolonged idling.

Your engine only needs a minute or 2 to get the oil flowing everywhere. But 15 minutes like people do is a waste of gas and makes polution. Oh but you get into a nice warm car...

The regulation of physics might want to inform you that warming your motor vehicle in the course of the iciness might want to strengthen the existence of your engine. The reasoning is this. maximum cutting-aspect motor vehicle engines are made from area age, mild weight resources. it truly is excellent for gas economic gadget and weight administration yet one detrimental result's that mild weight resources strengthen and contract extra with temperature than heavier resources. chilly metallic contracts, this can mean that the fewer warm the engine is, the tighter all aspects are and extra positioned on will ensue. you may't eliminate the positioned on yet you may shrink the load on the engine and shrink the positioned on at the same time as that is warming to operating temp with the aid of letting it idle till that is warmth and the oil is flowing in the course of the engine.

tes you should warm it up,especially in cold weather, because the oil is cold and thick.letting it warm up in cold weather lets the oil to get to all the moving parts.if the inside of the car gets too hot during warm up,then dont turn the heater on all the way, till you get in it.

It's not at all nessecary. Just allow it 30 seconds to a minute to get everything lubricated properly then drive away.
