I really don't want to get trapped into the commercialization of Christmas and long for a simple time of sharing with family and celebrating the real meaning of Christmas. Christmas has gotten to be such a stressful time of the year and it really takes away from the celebration of the birth of our Savior.

Christmas is a time for Giving, receiving and sharing. God gave us the best gift of all.... His Son... which was given with love. We in turn follow His example. Giving a gift is showing your love for the recipient. Now, if you don't want to go over board and max out your credit cards that is wonderful. Because that's when Christmas is out of hand and down right silly. If you want to see the Old Christmas traditions returned, this is wonderful, I back you all the way. To do this you can still exchange gifts and keep the old traditions at the same time by: Making home made gifts, such as a fruit basket made with your very own hands, or baked goods in a pretty box wrapped in pretty paper and a bow. Or knit a sweater or scarf, or make a dress or blouse or shirt. The list can go on and on. At one time, during my own life time, believe it or not.... neighbors use to make home made baked goodies or even a craft project and pass it around to their neighbors during the Holiday season. You can have a good Old Fashioned Christmas and keep the True Spirit of Christmas alive. Now if you don't want to exchange gifts at all, then explain this in a lovely hand made Christmas card, or one made from your computer even, to each member of your family. Let them know you are giving a life time of love as your gift and your husband and children are doing the same, then each of you sign the card with a heart. There is nothing better than a life time of love, patience and understanding. Have a wonderful joyous Old Fashioned Christmas.

take the money you would spend on gifts and donate it in honor of everyone on your list. make them cards, or tell them in person, what you've done and how you feel about christmas.

its hard for people to get mad when others are being helped. there's a great site where you can buy animals to donate to poor people around the world. the animals then become their livelihood:

check it out--its fun! (plus, animals were around the very first Christmas :-)
good luck,
God bless in this season!

Tell them the truth. Explain that you don't want any gifts from them, either. If it's all about the gifts for them, then they need a reminder of the reason for the season, anyway. Have you thought of handmade gifts? They are heartfelt, non-commercial, and more love goes into those than something bought from a store.

Giving is the biggest part of the holiday season. I'm not saying anyone needs to go buy until they are broke but if you are not giving anything..whats the point of celebrating? The real meaning of the holiday season is to share and give and be with family and friends.

hi there. merry christmas! i understand what you feel. christmas is about families getting together and remembering the child savior. but gifts shouldnt be fancy every time. especially like me now when i'm low on cash as i'm saving for my education. so i thot of this idea of still giving gifts to the people i work with and friends, i thot of giving them things i made myself. make chocolates, mold them in diffrent shapes, and place them in microwavable containers( after they consume the chocolates, they can use the container to heat food in microwave, reusable and practical), wrap the container with ribbons and there, nice gifts but cheap! its something to let my friends know that i thank them for being a part of my life, for being there all this time and would be looking forward to another year of wonderful time with them. i also make my own handmade cards! just be a little creative!

How about making a donation to a charity. You can give Christmas cards to your family in the card describe the charity you donated your money to. I prefer this way instead of giving gifts. (Especially to my Husband's family who seem to have everything.) This is most definitely in the "Spirit" of Christmas and I duno why it is not as popular.

Send Christmas cards...inside write a note explaining your decision, and the reasons for it. Tell them that you are sending your gift of LOVE, and that is all you ask for in return. Merry Christmas!

Just tell them. You may make an exception for the very young. We stopped years ago, it was just getting silly.
