I am looking for a few pieces that are modern and well-written. Something funny is desireable, but not essential. The length of the pieces should be a maximum of 2 minutes in length. I'd like to work from a Canadian or American playright.

Cheers!

#1- I would suggest hitting up a local library and looking for a monologue book. They usually have them categorized by gender, age, & length... Perfect for what you're asking!

#2- I've heard a lot of good things about monologues from the play, "Laughing Wild." I've also heard it's overdone. Your call.

#3- You might try the playwrights Diana Son & Paula Vogel. They write a lot of good plays with strong female roles. (i.e.- "StopKiss"- DS, "The Mineola Twins" & "How I Learned to Drive"- PV)

BEST WISHES!!!

I've often picked stuff up out of films, obviously not very famous ones, but with a bit of judicious editing you can get something good. Mamet is always a safe bet. I've one I lifted from 'My Cousin Vinny' as well, the girlfriend has a great speech at the end - funny too.
Otherwise just google new monologues and something will come up. I did that a while ago, sorry I can't remember what I used as a search word, but I found a couple of websites with material by new and up-coming American and Canadian playwrights. Good Luck. There is stuff out there.

Not sure, but have a look at the 'Vagina Monologues' book - there's some interesting and/or funny bits in there by a variety of authors. Or check out the poetry by Carol Ann Duffy - she's produced some outstanding pieces (though she is UK-based).
