For the Afrikaner people at this moment it's probably Koos de la Rey. Please watch the following movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGh4lA1S7yc

It's a song from a young Afrikaner who sing about the Boer War. South African music channel MK89 said the video is the best ever. It's also one of the top songs on Kyknet.

Koos de la Rey was the last Boer general who lead the Boers in the Anglo-Boer war. He wanted a PEACEFUL agreement. He was the most succesfull Boer-general. He treated his enemies with respect and wasn't a Afrikaner-nationalist; he stood for the whole of South Africa. Koos Kombuis describe Koos de la Rey as the Afrikaner's Steve Biko.

The song starts as follow (translated from Afrikaans to English):

On a hill in the night
We lie in wait in the dark
In the mud and the blood I lie cold,
Pack and rain clinging to me

The rest of the song can be read here: http://www.answp.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-341.html

Tim du Plessis, editor of Rapport, also wrote an article about the song... Very interesting indeed! It's in English:

PS. Koos de la Rey gets my vote too! The song gave many people a renewed interest in the Afrikaner's history. Not everything in our history was bad. Apartheid gave us a bad name... but the heroics of the Boer War and Great Trek cannot be forgotten!
