Ritalin is a narcotic and a derivative of cocaine. The drug actually has more addictive and detrimental properties than cocaine. It has been shown that Ritalin blocks around 70% of a persons dopamine receptors while cocaine only block around 50% of these receptors. Ritalin has been shown to cause cancer, liver damage, cardiovascular problems, hallucinations, and suicide in children. The fact that this drug has been shown to damage chromosomes and change brain cell structure proves that it is a dangerous narcotic and its long term affect can be very detrimental to a person mental health.
The drug is just another example of how the pharmaceutical companies have blatant disregard for the health of these children and people classified as ADD/ADHD.
Ritalin was actually first manufactured in 1950 and it wasn’t until 1980 that they came up with the diagnoses of ADD and not until 1987 that they came up with ADHD. So the pharmaceutical companies had a drug that the needed a diagnoses for in order to sell the drug. It is complete ignorance and greed that they continue to prescribe this Ritalin when there is much safer and more inexpensive methods for resolving ADD/ADHD. There is currently a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Ritalin and psychiatric groups for conspiring to create an all encompassing diagnosis for ADD/ADHD that would ultimately encompass nearly all children.
There is more research now that shows ADD/ADHD can be resolved, or reduced with chiropractic care. It has be indicated that many children suffering from these disorders have problems of their upper cervical spine(neck), often caused by birthing trama. It also has been shown that balancing the person’s ratio of omega-3 fat to omega-6 fat has just as much success in reducing the symptoms associated with ADD/ADHD.
The person should take an omega-3 supplement or fish oil, reduce the amount of grains and sugars they consume, and increase the amount of water they drink. Chiropractic and nutrition is a way to not only cover up the symptoms of ADHD but ultimately improve the life of these children.
I suggest trying a knowledgeable chiropractor who also works with nutrition.

What Is Ritalin Used For:
Ritalin is a central nervous system stimulant that is used to treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. It is also used to treat patients with narcolepsy.
Ritalin Facts:
1. Since Ritalin is often used as a generic term for ADHD drug treatments, many parents lump in every negative thing they have ever heard about ADHD treatments onto Ritalin. This is unfortunate, because Ritalin has been around for a very long time and has a good track record of helping a lot of children with ADHD. Other facts about Ritalin:
Ritalin was first introduced in 1956. the generic name for Ritalin is methylphenidate. short acting Ritalin is available in 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets that are usually taken two or three times a day.
2. Because of its stimulant properties, however, in recent years there have been reports of methylphenidate abuse by people for whom it is not prescribed. It is abused for its stimulant effects: appetite suppression, wakefulness, increased focus/attentiveness, and euphoria. Addiction to methylphenidate seems to occur when it induces rapid increases of dopamine in the brain. In contrast, the therapeutic effect is achieved by slow and steady increases of dopamine, which are similar to the natural production by the brain. The doses prescribed by physicians start low and increase slowly until a therapeutic effect is reached. That way, the risk of addiction is very small.

Ritalin will literally mess your body up. It is classified as a controlled substance. It will basically screw your dna up and make you a zombie. In children it will stunt growth (height AND weight). Not good stuff. If you are asking if it is going to get you high -- probably but that would be stupid. Look up the research on Yahoo and Newsweek under Ritalin.

It all depends on who it is being prescribed for...if it is for an adult, it has the opposite effect that it has on a child. It is commonly prescribed for adults who suffer with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia (fatigue) in very low doses.
