Who zzzzzz's in their sleep?

It might have something to do with the saying catching some Z's.

Because you can't spell how it really sounds. In early years, facial expressions were not very detailed in cartoon drawings, so verbal text was given to indicate a characters actions. Kind of like drunk or dazed characters having X's for eyes.

I think it's because Z is at the end of the alphabet and sleeping is (generally) at the end of the day.

Also Ahh-nnnnn-snort-snort is too complicated to write.

Don't really know why. I guess its the nearest sound using the alphabet. Could be xxxxxxxxxxxx's could it!
