Where did the framers of the Constitution get the idea of our government from?

When the framers came up with our Constitution and government they did alot of resource. One thing they did was resource other types of governments. They found a government that would work. A country that had the system. So what counrty was our Constitution based on.

Alot from the Magna Carta, and the parliamentary form of England.

For freedoms, philosophers mostly. Examples:

John Locke - “Every man has a property in his own person. This nobody has a right to, but himself.”

Voltaire - "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

They knew history, and they realized that the essence of freedom is the limitation of government. Unfortunately, the American people are not much for history. They have allowed politicians to increase the size of government, raised taxes and worked to erode our freedom.

The proper function of government was defined by Frederick Bastian in a book called THE LAW in 1849. Bastiat says the proper function of government is the protection of life and property. It was Marx who advocated the redistribution of wealth. Incidentally, the Constitution prohibited the federal government from directly taxing the American people. This was changed by the 16th Amendment in 1913. The Constitution also states that no state shall make anything but gold and silver legal tender. Congress gave us the Federal Reserve, also in 1913, which is the source of inflation. It's been down hill from there.

They were obviously influenced by the English Law under which they were raised, the Magna Carter and the English Tradition of Parliament. The tendency towards republican (limited representative government) rather than democracy (mob rule in their eyes) was base on the problems with ancient Greek democracy which were convey to them via authors such as Plutarch. Ben Franklin mentions that he was impressed with Xenophon's Memorabilia (which is a story of Socrtes at a dinner party) in his unfinished autobiogrphy. In Thomas Paine's Common Sence (a propaganda panthlet) refference is made to the history (obsure) an italian city state which inplys that there is a knowlege of it on the part of the reader.
