The others in the play i wrote for the churchs 13th Sabbath are learning their parts but we only have like 2 -3 weeks and I REALLY want to do my play. The last one we did it took two years (I didnt have a part) because the people in the play wouldnt learn their parts! I really dont want my play to take 2 years cause all it is is a converstaion, how do I help them?

(We made the play ourselves, so the person who gave the ideas knows all of his lines cause he wants to see his part done too, I know mine, the others are blowing it off. Me and the guy I was talking about are lead and the others besides the mother are second lead, mother only says two lines)

As for cast meeting, they barely want to come to church, they wouldnt if their parents didnt make them, and if they can find an excuse not to come they will, so its hard!

I am not joking about the two years, all the people who didnt have lines and the teachers were annoyed cause all we did was watched people read lnes off of papers and when they did do it , it was so crappy!

The parts were already given out, and they waited until 2 weeks ago to ask someone to write it.

It;s not the way we treat them cause the nicest teacher we have came up with the last play, still ended up taking two years!

2 years?????
You gotta be joking?!

Honey, there are plenty of people that can learn lines in a couple of DAYS.
And I am SURE there are MANY in your church that can do the same.
And might even WANT to help you out!
Seriously.

Just sit down with the people involved.
Reiterate everything to them... slowly.
2-3 weeks is show time.
Explain that you DO understand it is the holidays and people get sidetracked and are busy.
If they don't have THE TIME to do this, you UNDERSTAND.
But you NEED to replace them if they cannot learn their lines IN A WEEK.
Period.
And will gladly keep them in mind for your NEXT play piece.
But that some of you have a real need to do this, that it is very important to you.
It's something that you need to share of yourselves with your church.

ALSO.....it's a PLAY.
As in PLAY-ACTING.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE OTHER KIDS.
ASK SOME OLDER KIDS OR ADULTS!

Kiddo, ask the lady in church that has 5 kids to memorize her lines in a couple of days.
That woman can memorize 5 birthdays, 5 eating habits, 5 school schedules, 5 sport and activity schedules, 5 tastes in clothes, a grocery list that could feed an army, etc.
Get my drift?

Some people simply volunteer because they want to be "involved", well, involve them, just don't give them lines to learn.
It IS church.
It is a place of understanding and help.

Sounds like you need to find out how serious they are about being in your play.
Sit everyone down have a cast meeting tell them that if they really really want to be a part of this they need to put in some overtime practicing. Tell them you want it to go smoothly.
Just remember that if you know your lines youll do your part well it will be them up there too looking like fools.
Motivate them. I think as the time draws nearer they will eventually get on the ball...its a busy season and most people spread themselves too thin Im sure it will come together in the end dont fret it too bad and have fun with it.

With only two weeks to go, it is a little lot for this play. But the standard in directing is to set an "off book" date. Usually it is about the mid point of the rehearsals. From that point on, no scripts are allowed at rehearsal. They either have the lines, or they make a complete idiot of themselves stumping over them. Usually does not take more than a rehearsal or two "off book" and people get their lines down.

SHORT AND SIMPLE-

#1- Give them a rehearsal schedule with dates for when they MUST have their lines memorized by and rehearsal times. If they do not show up for these rehearsal dates, REMOVE THEM FROM THE PLAY. Simple as that. If they're not willing to work with you, you shouldn't have to be willing to work with them.

#2- On those off book days DO NOT let them have their scripts on stage. Have them call for lines they can't remember. If they don't want to look like an idiot calling for lines every five seconds, they will learn. QUICKLY.

#3- Don't be afraid to be tough. If they see that you are truly serious about this play, then they will pick up on it. Stick it out!!!

BEST WISHES!!!

If it is an option to bring in people not associated with your church, tell the drama department at your local middle or high school that you are putting on a play and need actors. You'll get a bunch of drama kids who want more stuff on their resume. That said, they'll want the play to succeed, and will be there because they want to be there.

Set a date for the play. They will know their lines by that time. Relax. You can't make others do things they don't want to do. Find someone else.

Just a thought...
If you aren't the kind of person people want to work for they won't.....Make sure you are being nice and not bratty, treating them positively will get you further than being mean.
I'm not saying thats what you are doing, but maybe there is a reason they aren't cooperating.....

You may need to find new actors. If they can't take it seriously, then they don't need to be in the play. That really annoys me...
