Something very specific to his hobbies and interests, in order to show that you really do understand him. Or a nice piece of clothing -- no underwear or pajamas, which would be hard to explain to his family -- which is consistent with his style.

The importance of the personal interest is far greater than the amount of money spent. It's easy to buy for a collector: just look for something small but unusual that would fit in his collection. Or for an athlete: equipment, supplies for his sport, things with his favorite team's logo on it, like that. Perhaps something connected with a talent in music or art. For an intellectual, a book or a magazine subscription. In any case, you always want to check that you are not duplicating something he already has.

Try conspiring with whatever member of his family (mom? dad? grandparent? sibling?) you can interest in the project, to discover what he wants and/or to avoid duplication.

Find out who his favorite actor/actress is and get him a collection of their movies. That way you can spend cozy nights together watching movies and cuddling! You know he'll watch those movies and not complain about it being a "chic flick"!
