I think you should report it to the police. Cash Converters will still have details of the phone and when they sold it to you.
I had almost the same problem, the only difference was that I bought mine brand new in Argos. I couldn't top it up, so I took it to a Vodafone shop and they told me it was reported stolen and blacklisted! Needless to say, I got a refund, but still no full explanation from Argos.
Incidentally, I won't be shopping there again.

I would definitely contact the police and see what the story is. There's a chance it's a mistake and the wrong ESN was logged as being stolen. There's also a chance the store you purchased the phone at was trafficking stolen equipment, in which case they may be able to help you with a refund.

nope this phone is stolen property so you have no right to keep.I would speak to the police though as you have reciept from cash converters and they have effectivley sold you stolen goods Im sure they must have a standard to work to in regards to checking they are not selling stolen property

this may be because the phone with other goos may have been stolen and sold to the company of the shop you should go back to the shop and ask the owner why you have this problem

under the sale of goods act the product must be fit for the purpose it was sold for. If this phone is in fact stolen then surly its not fit for the purpose as you cannot use it.

Try you local trading standards they will be able to advise you
