The round hole is for "overflow". If you leave your faucet turned on by accident and walk away, your sink will not spill over. The water will empty through "the round hole" or overflow hole.

Overflow - in some states it's a legal requirement to have them.

If a person turned on the sink and forgot to shut it off, the overflow drain would keep the water from overflowing onto the floor and such.

A BIG lifesaver if you have kids in the house!

it's an overflow. It helps drain an overfilled sink and allows the drain to work without air locking. Water drains better from a sink with an overflow.

Actually it's simple, it allows air to flow through. When you pour water down the drain, the air in the pipe has to go somewhere, and without that hole, the air will make drainage a LOT slower.

That is the over flow.. so in case you leave the water running and the bottom trap closed.. the water can escape in the overflow
