A man started from a location, went 5 miles South, then 5 miles East & then 5 miles North - and guess what, he was right back at his starting location!

How could this have been possible?

The commonly accepted answer is that he started at the North Pole. It's also possible that he started 5 + 2.5/pi miles from the South Pole. He walked south 5 miles to a point 2.5/pi miles from the South Pole, walked 5 miles east, completely circling the Pole, then walked north back to where he started. (The circumference of a circle with radius 2.5/pi is 5/pi * pi, or 5.)

1) He could have been at the north pole, went 5 miles south, went 5 miles east, maintaining his latitude, and went back 5 miles to north pole.

2) He could have been slightly more than 5 miles fromt he south pole, went 5 miles south, went 5 miles east, going completely around the world and back to the same longtitude, went 5 miles north back to the point of beginning.
