It depends upon the people- for about half the population, it's just a customary greeting which happens to be phrased as a question and isn't really meant to be answered. They really aren't even listening, they are just going through the motions of being minimally polite. While people who are genuinely concerned with the welfare of others still exist, such traits are less common these days, it's much more dog-eat-dog.

I care or wouldn't ask... to me its rude to ask a question and not want to truly know the answer. If someone asks me then they better be prepared for an honest answer and give me the attention I would give them.

I would imagine some of them do and some don't, in my opinion what the hell would be the point of asking if you didn't? other than to just hear yourself talk, which is a possibilty with some people

Some are sincere and some are not,it is quite obvious who they are when they start talking to someone else right after they ask you.I'm sincere when I ask someone why bother if I'm not.

Not always. They ask it as they are racing past you, and it seems to have become synonymous with "Hi" or "Hello", which is stoopid, if you ask Dragon. "How are you?" should mean that yer going to have a conversation with the person.

actually,i do.i wanna know if the ppl i really care abt are feeling good!if,not,they usually don't need to even say it.i just know...so.asking 'how are you?' is not only polite,it's a way of hospitality.
