It scares me how many people really still swear by creationism.

Anyways, the question has to be defined just a little bit more... do you mean the "chicken egg" or an egg in general? Evidence suggest that eggs in general were around billions of years before the chicken first evolved. So I'd go with the egg.

Whether the chicken egg came before the chicken comes down to how you wish to describe an egg: by the species that laid it or the species that came from it. The evolution of the chicken most likely occured from cross-species breeding. So what do you call that egg that the first chicken came out from? If a turtle laid an egg and a dinosaur came out, wouldn't you call that a dinosaur egg? I would, and thus I'd again say the chicken egg came before the chicken. But there are those who would refer to the species that created the egg, so in the turtle-dinosaur hypothetical it would've been a turtle egg to them.

And of course, there's always that old witty answer: The rooster came first. Dirty.

A chicken is born first. An egg is laid. Now, were you trying to ask, " Which came first, the chicken or the egg ? ". In that case, the egg came first. Whatever creature laid it wasn't a chicken, but, there could have been some genetic mutations and we end up with a chicken egg.

I think the chicken came first. If the egg came first then there wouldn't have been a chicken around to feed it and take care of it so it could grow into an adult chicken. It's the same as humans. Do you think babies just appeared here on earth and were able to take care of themselves? Me either. Have a wonderful day and God bless!

Which egg?
Which chicken?
The use of THE before "egg" and "chicken" means that there are a specific egg and a specific chicken.
If you specify: It will not remain a mystery, It will be a question of knowledge.

The egg is just an egg but a chicken has sexual parts and is sexually active. Therefore - the chicken came first. But was it the cockerel or the hen that came first? and was it from foreplay or full blown sex?

The chicken came first as a cross-breed of two other species, and then laid an egg of its own kind.
