A beta release is a version of a program that is released to the world for testing purposes. By releasing a beta version many bugs can be found and fixed. Once developers are happy with the quality of a product, they release a stable build.

Beta versions will often have new features but the program is likely to crash. Stable versions of a program should no crash at all and are better for the regular user.
