I want to buy some ram from ebay for my boyfriend's dell computer, as it's running incredibly slow. This is his spec at the minute is:

Memory Slots
DRAM Slot #1256 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)

I've got my eye on an ebay listing, selling some ram. This is what it states:

2 x 512mb pieces
DDR PC-2100R
266 mhz
184 pins
Registered memory
MT18VDDT6472G-265C3

If I bought these ram sticks, and got them put in my boyfriend's computer, would they work okay and be compatible?

Have you thought of calling dell and getting a quote off them?

That depends on if there are a further 2 slots availible. Each chip requires 1 slot, unless you are planning on binning the 256 meg chip. The motherboard can handle PC2700, so PC2100 wont be a problem. However you really should try to find a single chip if possible, and trying to find 1 that is also PC2700, (again unless you are binning the 256 meg) to keep up the bus speed. If you mix and match speeds, the ram will run at the slowest chip's speed. i.e, it will run at PC2100 instead of PC2700. If memory serves me, thats about a 33Mhz drop off. Also Unregistered is also usually a better idea, atleast in my opinion.
Hope this helps.

it would work, but it that ram is running at pc2100, thats quite slow compared to todays standards.

if you b/f's pc has 1256mb of ram , we must assume it has 1 slot of 1 gig and 1 256mb.

Most older pc's only have 2 ram slots, so you might be buying that ram for nothing anyway...

RFC is incorrect below me, the speed is irrevelent, however if you have 1 card running at 2700 and the other at 3200 the speed of BOTH the ram will only run at 2700, the speed does NOT indicate the compatabily unless your talking DDR2 ram which can run at pc4000 speed

that ram is not a step up... go to your local pc store and buy another 1 gig card (will cost you about 70-80 pounds) and make sure that the ram speed is PC3200 as this will help increase efficiency...

if you want me to expand, send me an e-mail.

I wouldn't recommend the ones your looking at for starters its only pc2100 so its slower and it also happends to be Registered you don't want that either as registered memory is for servers. You need to look for PC2700 Unregistered Unbuffered RAM. I recommend Corsair or Kingston they have good modules for decent prices also they would be able to help you pick whats right for your machine.

probably not you need to do a search in ebay with these exact words PC2700 DDR SDRAM, you need to stick with exactly what you got just bigger memory, ie 512mb or 1gb.

Go to the DELL Website which is www.dell.co.uk/ and in the search bar type MEMORY .Have your system scanned and then go in to the DELL COMPUTER OWNERS MANUAL and you will be able to see EXACTLY what memory is installed and what the maximum amount is. Also visit www.crucial.com and have your memory scanned. The result should match the information provided in your owners manual.

1 gb might help, but 266 mhz is not fast enough.
it might work properly.and programs may run smoothly too.but they wont be what you call "fast".

look for a 400mhz pc700.if u cant afford that,go on with what u've got.

gift is always worth a gift.
