They couldn't be creative enough to come with another name.
This is what Wikipedia says, but it doesn't really answer your question:
The earliest known use of the name America is from 1507, when a globe and a large map created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges described the combined continents of the North and South Americas. Although the origin of the name is uncertain,[3] the most widely held belief is that expressed in an accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, which explains it as a feminized version of the Latin name of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (Americus Vespucius); in Latin, the other continents' names were all feminine. Vespucci theorized, correctly, that Christopher Columbus, on reaching islands in the Caribbean Sea in 1492, had come not to India but to a "New World".
The Americas were also known as Columbia, after Columbus, prompting the name District of Columbia for the land set aside as the U.S. capital. Columbia remained a popular name for the United States until the early 20th century, when it fell into relative disuse; but it is still used poetically and appears in various names and titles. One female personification of the country is called Columbia; she is similar to Britannia.[4][5][6][7] Columbus Day is a holiday in the U.S. and other countries in the Americas commemorating Columbus' October 1492 landing.
The term "united States of America" was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. On November 15, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which stated "The Stile [sic] of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'" The name was originally proposed by Thomas Paine.
The adjectival and demonymic forms for the United States are American, although this term can also refer to other inhabitants of either North or South America.

The united states in not named america. The countries name is the united states. The are many countries named the united states, so to be specific, they call it the united states of america.
If there were 2 Brazil's, they would call one probably Brazil of america. They call themselves americans because it sounds better than unitarians, or unistaters. Just a note, there are three americas, north, south and central.

If I found President George Washington then would ask him. I know only America is not a continent its continent consisted of South America and North America. We call USA as America and its citizen as American. So USA is named as America and with all countries named United States of America (USA). USA short name is nice to read, write and feel. Some years age Russia was named as USSR. So why not American will not called USA?

There is no reason for this. The United States of America is a group of Governments banding to form a single Federal Government. The USSR was like this when it was still together now all of the republics have gone their own way.
USSR=United Soviet Socialist Republics

Actually, you have North America and South America. Canada, the United States of America, and Mexico are in North America. Then you have the ismis between North and South, and below that you have South America.
Remember, the name of our country is the United States of Amercia, which people shorten to America. If you don't know your history of the country (how the territories were formed and purchased from other countries, later formed into states, then united into one country) then you wouldn't know why it is called "United States" versus America.
Think back to the history of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) when they combined a bunch of countries into one Republic. If the USA broke up, then states could become countries also. In fact, the civil war was fought because states wanted to break off from the USA.

We are the United States of America. It is true that most of the world calls us America, but that is not our name. It 's almost like calling you by your last name.

IT IS WHAT IT IS.
You are technically correct, but this is really a non-starter.
When people think of specific countries in our region they typically think in terms of NORTH America, CENTRAL America, and SOUTH America.
Also, when person A says he's from America to person B, person B doesn't think "Gee, I wonder which country he's refering to." He knows he refering to the USA.

Maybe because it started as a federation of states, who had their own government ,laws, currencies.
Two states were independent nations (Texas and Hawaii).
There was another country with a similar set up(U.S.S.R.) but it collapsed.
In the near future the European Union could develop as a nation.
