laser weapons/or whatever to accompany it?

I would have thought that NASA will use the base on the moon as a launch pad for deep space travel. The main problem with getting rockets off earth is the gravitational pull. They could put rockets together on the moon and then it would be easier and use less fuel to send them off to deep space. Basically the same idea as the Space Station.

NASA will build a base on the moon in a few years for energy compund prooduction valuable than found other materials on earth..

Once they have completed the gravity survey, they'll build the base close (but not too close) to the site of the buried monolith. They should have completed this task by 2001, but things got delayed after bits started falling off the space shuttles.
