I've always wondered if it's a physiological need that relates to ability to birth, or if it's more of an aesthetic trait that serves to help attract a mate. Or if it's a little of both - it certainly works for me!

The male and female of the species performed different functions. The extra weight in the middle was for balance women needed for the chores they performed. Men's weight is toward the upper torse, female weight is from the waist down.

Uh, Juan, we have to start with the birds and the bees to answer this question. Here goes:
Womens bodies are designed (intelligently or at random!) to deliver babies at some point in their lives. You've heard the phrase "Form follows function". Well, the round "bums" follow the contour of the hips which are larger than men's to allow the safe passage of a child the size of a small watermelon! Women's hips don't start to widen and round out until puberty, another indication of purpose. And yes, men are attracted to large hips and breasts, purportedly to indicate good breeding stock for the continuation of their genes. Pretty basic instinct, no? Indeed, the Human Being was, once, long ago, a natural mammal. Hope this helps. HB

Their bums are more rounded for two reasons #1.) Women have more fat in that part of the body so to bare a child. A woman loses hormones when the child feeds from it, and the woman has to have extra fat for her own body to feed from to keep her healthy.
#2.) Also a female skeleton is different than a males skeleton...A female has a "bowl shaped" pelvis (Again to bare a child) and a male has flat "V" shape pelvis...Having a bowl shaped pelvis and a little extra "meat on the bones thus makes for a rounded booty!

It's the distribution of adipose tissue(fat, that is.) Women have about ten or so percent more fat than men, and that stored energy once meant the difference between life and death for both the mother and her baby during times of famine. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if that's why it's a desirable trait either ;) It's interesting to see how biology plays into what we like and don't like in a mate.

It is to attract a mate. Check out Desmond Morris' book "The Naked Ape" It tells about many ways that men and women's bodies are made to biologically attract mates. It was a very interesting anthropological study.

it's a little of both. to attract us and to physically let us know (more of a prehistoric trait) let us know that you are a good canidate to produce max amount of offspring. Women with wide hips actually atract alot of looks from men, but we do not know that it is for that reason anymore. So we quickly play it off as that isn't what we like. best example is a baboon learn of them and learn how we are suppose to be.

It all in the massages if you were nointed up as a baby you will have rounder bums but if you were nointed down like they do in the Indian and Chinese cultures you will have flat bums. For some people rounded bums comes from their genetic inheritance.
