A period indicates that the reproductive organs are mature. This means that the ovaries are functioning and that the uterus is ready to accept a fertilized egg. When a girl/woman has her period that means that there was no fertilized egg and then sheds the lining of the uterus (which protects the egg).

Anyways periods or menstrual cycle are ovulatory cycles.In lay mans terms it is the whole cycle of release of egg from ovary to the thickening of uterine endometrium and then bleeding from vagina which is because endometrium comes back to normal.it is a complex cycle.the 5 days of bleeding is normally what we notice.periods are important for a women to have a normal fertile life.
