i have a lot of programs that show up in the add/remove window.I thought i uninstalled them but they're still there i have tried removing them
but i get a message telling me that such and such a file could not be found, how do i permanantly delete these pests

You can use a registry cleaner to remove them. Or, try CCleaner from CCleaner.com... One of the options on the left side of the screen allows you to bring up the list and remove deleted programs from the list.

You have probably deleted the files of these programs but not uninstalled them. Download a uninstaller program from www.download.com which can fully remove your program, they will most likely be trials but it will be enough.

You can open the Registry yourself and remove them. Just be careful (it would be best to export any registry keys before deleting them).

HKLM\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Uninstall

go to start , find , type in the file u thought u lost and click on find , then delet that cos somtimes part of the file can still be there
