My siamese fighter whom i've had for three months and was previously fit and healthy died three days ago. About two weeks before his death he did seem a bit zonked out on occassions and would sometimes just swim into the plants and crash out for a bout five minutes, but aparet from this he was fine. My boyfriend said it could of been that he was eating to much, but we noticed that he had what looked like a white moustache, around his mouth (the night before he died) then the next day his whole head seemed really pale and he slowly passed away. We do water tests regulary and the water is fine, the tank is huge and not overcrowded, with loads of natural plants, it's not exposed to any noise and the all the fish are happy, so this is a puzzle. Does anyone know what could of caused this unfortunate death?

Sounds like mouth rot. When you see fish flashing (running into plants, etc as if to scratch an itch), you should assume a fungus or parasite and medicate the tank immediately.

Please do some research on fish diseases and treatment so other fish you own do not have to suffer for 2 weeks and die.

As to this someone else said, "told properly these fish live and survive in very shallow waters sumtimes no more than a jam jars worth"

See the following link for pictures of the "jam jar's worth" of water that these fish live in when in their natural habitat.

Sounds like cotton wool fungus. If you keep a comunity aquarium you must expect to lose a few fish now and then, I wouldn`t worry unless you start losing a couple a month. Keep an eye on the rest of them. A lot of the smaller fish espicialy livebearers dont live much more than a year anyway, and you never really know their age when you buy them. Good luck.

depends on what fish are in with your siamese ,my experince they are best kept by them selves they are not a natural comunity fish as by there name they like to fight off rivals and sumtimes if they have to battle other fish they tend to tire early, if it was a white substance round mouth sounds to me like mouth rot and that will kill them. if you can imagine if when you was sold this fishand told properly these fish live and survive in very shallow waters sumtimes no more than a jam jars worth , this is how i kept and bred them ,standing them side by side they would show them selves off to each other. to sum up they are best kept on there own say a 6"x4" tank would surfice and they would be at there best . Ive seen these fish breed its a site to be sure as they build a bubble nest and put one egg in each bubble then care for them as they grow to small fry picking them up if they fall out and put them back pains takenly. hope this is been of sum help ...regards Chris

he probably was sick and got a fungus infection. You may have only had him a short while but he may have been in the pet shop a long time and could have been an old fish.
